Practical jokes are nothing new when April Fools is just around the corner. Some might receive a laughing response, while some will get scrutiny. This last couple of days, Justin Bieber, a world-famous singer made a prank that triggered a lot of people around the world.
Being a public figure, the singer now had to face the backlash he was getting from both his fans and non-fans. This resulted into another Instagram Post from him stating,
“There’s always gonna be people offended, there’s also people who don’t take jokes very well, I am a prankster and it was APRIL FOOLS. I didn’t at all mean to be insensitive to people who can’t have children. A lot of people I know, their first go to prank on April fools is telling their parents they are pregnant to get a big reaction. But I will apologize anyway and take responsibility and say sorry to people who were offended”Justin Bieber Instagram Post
The apology seems honest and heartfelt enough. It somewhat showed us how he got the idea of the said “insensitive” prank. As most of you would know, a newlywed couple who wanted to get a big reaction to someone close to them would be “that false pregnancy” prank.
Not really defending the guy, but it does sound like he didn’t have a clue on the would-be reactions of people who are watching his every move. The intention of the prank was all in good fun, but of course being a famous person, he had millions of followers that wouldn’t totally agree with the idea.
To show the people that he really had no bad intentions with his prank, he continued with,
“I truly don’t want anyone to be hurt by a prank.. it’s like when I shoved cake in my little sisters face for her birthday expecting her to laugh but she cried. You sometimes just don’t know what will hurt someone’s feelings not to compare pregnancy with cake in the face but it’s just to paint the picture of not knowing what will offend. Some might have laughed but some were offended .. I think With pranks u sometimes have to roll that dice.”Justin Bieber Instagram Post
It really goes to show how public figures fit into this world of ours. As if they aren’t allowed to do anything that a person would normally do that could potentially appear as an insensitive act. Just one of the costs of being a world-famous person I suppose.
How The Prank Started
The prank started with a post in Instagram, showing the result of a sonogram that revealed a fetus somewhere around 12-20 weeks old. There were no captions, but it did receive a lot of congratulatory remarks, alongside comments showing skepticism.
The singer, being relentless with his prank, posted another picture on Instagram, showing his wife Hailey with a medical staff touching her belly. It truly seemed it was the real deal. It even added the caption,
“If U thought it was April fools”Justin Bieber Instagram Post
Some were now convinced, while some still believe the post was leading towards an April Fool’s prank. A couple of hours later, he posted another sonogram picture that showed a little puppy at the center with the caption,
”Wait omg is that a,,, APRIL FOOLS”Justin Bieber Instagram Post
By then, the comments were coming in like crazy. Some were laughing, some were disappointed, and others were furious. There were a lot of big words being thrown in the comment section, from racism, stupidity to insensitivity.
But taking from only the sensible ones that do have a point, it was really about the thought of being an insensitive prank to those other women who aren’t able to conceive or someone who lost their baby.
Maybe if we were still in the 80’s or 90’s, it wouldn’t be news-worthy at all, but now that we’re living in a society full of white knights and social justice warriors, you’re going to have to take the fall and be done with it.
