The dark comedy series that captured the hearts of millions of fans around the globe has now been cancelled by Netflix, and fans are vocally upset about it on Twitter. After wrapping up the 3rd season of Santa Clarita Diet, there were already rumors that it might not get a 4th season, but thousands were still hopeful it would get its fourth season.
Sadly enough, the rumors were true and was axed from the streaming service. Netflix’s statement reads,
“The world had never known a ‘zom-com’ until Santa Clarita Diet, and we’re indebted to creator Victor Fresco for bringing this idea to Netflix,”
“To their endless credit, the incredible Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant were totally game, with an uncanny knack for comedy that brought Sheila and Joel Hammond to vibrant life, even though one of them was undead. We’re grateful to Victor, Drew, and Timothy, along with fellow executive producers Tracy Katsky, Aaron Kaplan, Chris Miller and Ember Truesdell and the terrific cast, including Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo, and crew for three hilarious seasons for Netflix members to discover for years to come.”
Although TV show cancellations is not that uncommon, Santa Clarita Diet getting axed was a bit surprising. Apart from being one of the many typical rom-com TV shows out there, it received very positive reviews, exceeding even its previous seasons 1 and 2. Which is why it’s understandable that a lot of its loyal fans shared their grief and disappointment through social media.
The worst thing about the cancellation was it left the audience with an unsatisfying ending, a cliffhanger to be precise. So, you could only imagine how fans would react to the show’s demise.
Hopefully, Netflix would have a change of heart and try to bring back the show for its fourth season. At the very least, provide their audience a good ending to the show and not leave us all hanging. It’s not impossible really, seeing that they’ve done it multiple times in the past, renewing and picking up canceled TV shows. Hoping we’ll get to see another season of Joel Hammond (Timothy Olyphant) struggling to feed his ravenous wife, Sheila (Drew Barrymore).
Despite of the show’s cancellation, Victor Fresco (Director) and Tracy Katsky (Executive Producer) showed their thanks with a statement,
“Like our audience, we were all-in on Sheila and Joel. Their relationship, in the face of incredible adversity, was inspiring to write and to watch. Mostly, they were funny, which in a comedy is important.”
“Netflix took a chance on this odd show and for that we will always be grateful. They were supportive, ever positive, and appreciative of our work. Until about noon today,”
“Still, they were just one phone call away from being a perfect studio. Not bad. Everything ends. This was a thing. And so, it ended. We’ll miss it but are proud of the work we did and will always appreciate the love and enthusiasm we felt from our audience. It if was up to them, Sheila and Joel would continue for another 10,000 years”
Other TV shows that got cancelled on Netflix
2019 really is a bad start for fans as Netflix started axing some of the most beloved TV shows on their streaming platform.
‘Friends from College’ is one of Netflix’s shows that got cancelled earlier this year. After two seasons of reunion and adult life comedy, Netflix decided to cancel the show. Its low rating and poor reviews also didn’t help the cause of its renewal for a third season. What’s sad is that we don’t get to see some more of the cast favorites, Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Savage and Cobie Smulders.
The marvel series The Punisher and Jessica Jones are also cancelled and won’t be returning for a new season on Netflix. This was predicted for awhile now, since Disney will soon launch its own streaming platform called Disney Plus. That being said, there is a possibility that there will be a 3rd season for Punisher and 4th season for Jessica Jones, but may not as soon as we wanted it to be. Same sentiment goes to the other Marvel series that got the axe last year, Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage.
